Dr. Justin Schwartz, head of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and Kobe Steel Distinguished Professor at North Carolina State University, has been named a Fellow of ASM International.

ASM International, the world’s largest association of metal-centric materials scientists and engineers with more than 30,000 members worldwide, is dedicated to informing, educating and connecting the materials community to solve problems and stimulate innovation around the world. Fellows are recognized for their distinguished contributions in the field of materials science and engineering. The Fellows program develops a broadly based forum for technical and professional leaders to serve as advisors to the Society.

In a citation for the honor, Schwartz is recognized “for the advancement of high temperature superconductors and their applications as well as supporting the fledgling superconducting materials technology industrial base, and for advancing diversity in materials science and engineering.”

Schwartz leads a research group at NC State with primary interests in the underlying science that drives performance of advanced oxide materials, including mechanical and functional failure, manufacturing, processing, packaging and system integration.

He earned a B.S. in nuclear engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana in 1985 and a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1990.

Schwartz will receive the honor at the Convocation of Fellows to be held at the ASM Awards Dinner on Tuesday, October 6, 2015, in Columbus, Ohio.
