Phil Mintz is the executive director of NC State University Industry Expansion Solutions (IES) and director of the North Carolina Manufacturing Extension Partnership. He has a B.S. in engineering operations from NC State and an M.S. in industrial engineering from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University.

Asheville’s Minerals Research Laboratory remains rock solid

The Minerals Research Laboratory (MRL) was established in Asheville in 1946 as a joint venture between the state of North Carolina and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). TVA eventually discontinued its support of the laboratory, and in 1954 the operation was transferred to the then-School of Engineering. The MRL is still a part of the College of Engineering; since 2004 it has been part of Industry Expansion Solutions, the College’s extension service.

Industry Expansion Solutions helping fight the COVID-19 virus

In mid-March, NC State’s Phil Mintz received a request from the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) asking for “volunteers who can donate and provide and/or produce within two weeks large-scale quantities of critical supplies to help the nation respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.” Since then, his phone hasn’t stopped ringing.
