Incredible achievements in a challenging year

In a difficult year when little went as planned, the College of Engineering has accomplished some incredible achievements, from taking up critical response efforts to the COVID-19 pandemic to opening the new Fitts-Woolard Hall and meeting fundraising goals that will grow the College’s impact for generations to come.

Low-cost cameras could be sensors to remotely monitor crop stress

Researchers from CALS and COE, led by postdoctoral research scholar Paula Ramos-Giraldo, have worked together to construct a low-cost camera system to monitor crop stress remotely. Their StressCam will aid researchers, plant breeders and ultimately farmers.

Fertilizer of the future

An interdisciplinary team led by Katharina Stapelmann is setting out on an ambitious three-year project to completely rethink how nitrogen-based fertilizers are produced and used. From on-farm fertilizer production to on-demand, precision irrigation, their project aims to cut energy use, protect the water supply and increase yields.
