Palmtag wins NC State Outstanding Teacher Award

Congratulations to Dr. Scott Palmtag, research professor in the Department of Nuclear Engineering at NC State University, and recipient of the 2023-24 recipients of the Outstanding Teacher Award.

Dr. Palmtag served as the Chief Technologist for the Consortium for Advanced Simulation of Light Water Reactors (CASL) and was instrumental in the development of the VERA Core Simulator. He also served as a teaching associate professor (2014-2018) before becoming a research professor (2018 to present) in the Department. He teaches the Fundamentals of Nuclear Engineering course and serves as a senior design project faculty member. He serves as president of Core Physics, Inc., consulting on nuclear reactor analysis, custom software development, and numerical methods development. Prior positions held include Engineering Technical Lead at GE – Global Nuclear Fuels and senior nuclear engineer at Studsvik Scandpower.

His research interests include reactor physics, computational reactor physics, and multiphysics modeling.

The Provost’s Award for Excellence in Teaching is the most prestigious award for exceptional teaching given to professional full-time faculty from among NC State’s 10 colleges and the University College. The award was established in 2021 to underscore the importance of teaching and to encourage, identify, recognize, reward, and support teaching within the university.
