He has been a member of the NC State faculty since 1989.

Kim’s primary research areas include characterization and performance modeling of asphaltic materials and asphalt pavement systems, condition assessment of asphalt pavements, pavement evaluation by accelerated pavement testing, and pavement preservation.

His current research is focused on the development of a long-term aging method for performance testing of asphalt concrete and the development of performance-related specifications for asphaltic materials used in new construction and pavement preservation.

Kim is the President of the Korean-American Scientists and Engineers Association and a member of several other professional organizations, including the Transportation Research Board, the Association of Asphalt Paving Technology, the American Society of Civil Engineers, and the International Society of Asphalt Pavements (ISAP), where he is a board member and was the chair of the 2014 ISAP Conference on Asphalt Pavements.

He has published more than 270 papers in national and international technical journals and proceedings and three books including the ASCE book, Modeling of Asphalt Concrete. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Traffic and Transportation Engineering and the International Journal of Highway Engineering. He has won numerous awards, including the Alcoa Foundation Engineering Research Achievement Award (1998), the Walter J. Emmons Best Paper Awards by the Association of Asphalt Paving Technologists (1997, 2006 and 2009), Alumni Association Outstanding Research Award (2014), the Alcoa Foundation Distinguished Engineering Research Award (2015), and was named the Alumni Association Distinguished Graduate Professorship for his excellence in teaching and mentoring (2012). Kim is also an elected fellow of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology and the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Kim received a B.S. degree in civil engineering from Seoul National University in Korea (1980) and M.S. (1985) and Ph.D. (1988) degrees in civil engineering from Texas A&M University.
