College of Engineering students advancing sustainability at NC State

Twenty students from NC State’s College of Engineering have been selected as NC State Stewards — the university’s student sustainability ambassadors — for the 2015-2016 academic year.

Supported by the University Sustainability Office, the NC State Stewards’ mission is to create a more sustainable campus, community and world by encouraging individuals to adopt more sustainable practices. College of Engineering students serving as Stewards include:

Tyler Boquet-Caron, chemical engineering
Allison Bryan, environmental engineering
Garnett Bullock, environmental engineering
Thomas Clark, aerospace engineering
Hillary Dimig, chemical engineering
Alexandra Dinwiddie, environmental engineering
Cristina Guillen, chemical engineering
Ryan Hardison, chemical engineering

Ryan Kilgore, chemical engineering
Annie Lopez, biological and agricultural engineering
Catie McEntee, electrical engineering

“The Stewards promote sustainable actions among their peers so that environmental, social and economic responsibility is cultivated at NC State and beyond,” said Rebekah Dunstan, the Stewards’ program coordinator.

Since the program launched in 2013, the number of Stewards has grown from six to more than 40 students representing majors from 9 of NC State’s academic colleges.

In addition to promoting sustainable practices through workshops, presentations and campus events, the Stewards initiate projects that improve sustainability of campus. Previous projects include launching an on-campus plastic bag recycling program, conducting residence hall energy conservation competitions that have saved more than $10,000, creating virtual campus nature walks, and managing the installation of outdoor solar charging stations, which will be operational later this year near Tucker and Owen residence halls.
