Engineering alumnus joins NC State Board of Trustees

Thomas E. Cabaniss, a North Carolina State University engineering alumnus, has been appointed to the University’s Board of Trustees.

Cabaniss serves as managing partner of McGuireWoods LLP, focusing on corporate finance, restructuring and bankruptcy. He received a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering from NC State in 1972 and also holds a law degree from the University of Virginia. He was elected to the Board of Trustees by the University of North Carolina Board of Governors.

Cabaniss is a former president of the NC State Alumni Association Board of Directors and a former member of the NC State University Foundation Board of Directors, the Alumni Association Campaign for Excellence Committee and Coalition 2000. He has also served as a founding member of the State Club Board of Directors and vice president of the NC State Student Aid Association. He is a member of the WH Page Lifetime Giving Society and a Lifetime Member of the NC State Alumni Association. He established the Tom Cabaniss Scholarship for Volleyball and the 125th Anniversary Challenge to encourage alumni giving to the university.

Earlier this year, Cabaniss was honored with the Watauga Medal, the university’s top nonacademic honor.

NC State’s Board of Trustees is composed of 13 members: eight are elected by the UNC Board of Governors, four are appointed by the governor, and the remaining member is the president of the student body.
