Huang honored for energy leadership by Charlotte Business Journal

Dr. Alex Huang, Distinguished Professor of Electrical Engineering and director of the FREEDM Systems Center at North Carolina State University, will receive a 2013 NC Energy Leadership Award from the Charlotte Business Journal.

The award honors leaders working to establish North Carolina as a global force in the energy industry. Huang will be recognized along with nine other winners at a Jan. 25 banquet in Charlotte.

Huang was honored for his work at FREEDM, a National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center headquartered at NC State that is developing smart grid technologies. In 2011, MIT Technology Review named the center’s smart transformers among the world’s most important emerging technologies. Huang is also director of NC State’s Advanced Transportation Energy Center, a hybrid and electric vehicle research initiative located within FREEDM.

Huang’s specific research interests include renewable energy integration and smart grids, advanced power electronics, power semiconductor devices, and power management integrated circuits. He is a Fellow of IEEE.

Huang received his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering in 1983 from Zheijiang University in China. He received his master’s degree in electrical engineering in 1986 from China’s University of Electronic Science and Technology. He earned is PhD in 1992 from Cambridge University in the United Kingdom.
