IBM executive, Watson computer to present at NC State Sept. 28

A prominent IBM executive will speak to engineering and business students at North Carolina State University on Wednesday, Sept. 28, as part of the company’s 100th anniversary celebration. The event will also feature a demonstration by Watson, the artificial intelligence computing system that competed on the “Jeopardy!” quiz show earlier this year.

Ginni Rometty, IBM’s senior vice president for strategy, marketing and sales, will speak about “Lessons from IBM’s Century of Innovation, Technology and Collaboration” as seen from an industry perspective. The event begins at 11 a.m. in room 3400 of Nelson Hall on NC State’s North Campus.

Students who want to attend the event should complete the online registration form. Seating for the event is limited and students are encouraged to arrive early.

Buses will be available to transport engineering students on Centennial Campus to and from the event, but seating for less than 100 students is available. Buses will be waiting outside Engineering Building II at 10 a.m. and will depart at 10:20 a.m. Buses will return to EBII at about 12:30 p.m.

Watson, which is capable of answering questions posed in natural language, competed on “Jeopardy!” in February in the show’s only human-versus-machine match-up to date. Watson beat Brad Rutter, the show’s all-time money leader, and Ken Jennings, who holds the longest winning streak in the show’s history.
