Dr. Alan E. Tonelli, INVISTA Professor of Fiber and Polymer Chemistry in the Department of Textile Engineering, Chemistry and Science (TECS) at North Carolina State University, has been named a Fellow of the American Chemical Society (ACS).

Tonelli will be honored Aug. 29 at the society’s National Meeting & Exposition for his outstanding research accomplishments and his service as a member of ACS. He will also be recognized in the August 2011 issue of Chemical & Engineering News.

Tonelli was a member of the Polymer Chemistry Research Department at AT&T Bell Laboratories in New Jersey for 23 years before joining the Fiber and Polymer Science Program in the College of Textiles at NC State in 1991.

His research interests include the conformations, configurations and structures of synthetic and biological polymers, their determination by nuclear magnetic resonance, and establishing their effects on the physical properties of polymers. He is also a Fellow American Physical Society.

Tonelli received his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Kansas in 1964 and his PhD in polymer chemistry from Stanford University in 1968.

ACS is the world’s largest society for chemical professionals with membership of more than 163,000 chemists. Its board of directors created the ACS Fellows Program in 2008.

TECS is affiliated with the College of Engineering but administered by the College of Textiles.
