Felder named first winner of IFEES education award

Dr. Richard M. Felder, Hoechst Celanese Professor Emeritus of Chemical Engineering at North Carolina State University, has been named the first winner of the 2010 Global Award for Excellence in Engineering Education from the International Federation of Engineering Education Societies (IFEES).

The award recognizes an individual who has made outstanding and original contributions to engineering education through exemplary teaching, research, and leadership innovations. Felder was selected based upon the impact of his work on the global engineering education community.

The award was presented in October during the IFEES Award Banquet at the 2010 World Engineering Education Forum in Singapore. Felder delivered an address at the banquet.

Felder is the co-author of the book Elementary Principles of Chemical Processes and has authored and co-authored more than 300 papers on engineering and science education and chemical process engineering.

He has presented more than 650 workshops and seminars on effective teaching methods throughout North and South America, Australia, South Africa and numerous European and Asian countries. He has also co-directed the National Effective Teaching Institute under the auspices of the American Society for Engineering Education since 1991.

Felder received his BS in chemical engineering from the City College of New York in 1962 and his PhD in chemical engineering from Princeton University in 1966.  He has also received honorary doctorates from the State University of New York and the University of Illinois to acknowledge his contributions to engineering education.
