About the Office of Faculty Development and Success (OFDS)

Engineering Faculty Advancement's evolution to Office of Faculty Development and Success

Engineering faculty discuss various topics in a breakout group.

In the landscape of academia, the term “faculty development” stands as a complex puzzle and a challenge to interpret. What constitutes the development of faculty members? Is it confined to the act of teaching a course, or does it involve a more structured and formalized approach? These were the questions that prompted the Office of Faculty Development and Success, formerly Engineering Faculty Advancement, to convene and reflect during the past summer.

The discussion centered on what faculty development looks like today. Since COVID, OFDS went through a series of exercises to evaluate its current activities and future direction. In response to the increased demands and evolving challenges within engineering education, OFDS has undertaken a strategic and purposeful shift.

This transformation isn’t just about words; it reflects a thoughtful understanding of the changing needs of faculty members and the dynamic nature of expertise in higher education.

This evolution underscores a commitment to not only facilitate faculty advancement, but also to cultivate a culture of ongoing development and strong community. As we navigate the complexities of higher education, OFDS is positioned to be a steadfast resource by providing support tailored to the unique challenges faced by engineering faculty, and in essence, marking a pivotal moment in OFDS’ trajectory, affirming a dedication to the continuous improvement and triumph of engineering faculty.

Developing Programming

Wolfpack Engineering Unleashed (WEU)

Led by Associate Dean Joel Ducoste and Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Teaching Professor Anna Howard, Ph.D., NC State became part of the Kern Entrepreneurial Engineering Network in the summer of 2022. Since then, Howard, Kate Saul, Ph.D., and Nathalie Lavoine, Ph.D. lead the annual WEU Incubator that introduces the concepts of using student engagement strategies using the 6C’s: Curiosity, Connections, Creating Value, collaboration, character and communication. This spring, we will also be offering workshops related to storytelling, teamwork and developing your own professional pathway to reach your goals, including the WEU Incubator scheduled for May. See here for more information.

New Faculty Community

OFDS has always led a new faculty orientation for the College of Engineering, but now, we are expanding our community with two events in January and April to build a network and learn from each other during those first three years of teaching. If you have been a faculty member for less than three years, reach out to engineeringfds@ncsu.edu to join the mailing list for networking opportunities.

Faculty Development Needs Assessment

OFDS’ priority is providing value to faculty across the 12 departments that they serve. Share your interests to help us tailor support for your professional goals and enhance job satisfaction. Starting this spring, OFDS will conduct a pilot study, beginning with an evaluation to identify the needs of the  Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering Department. This will be followed by meetings with every department through 2025.

These initiatives and more to come are targeted not only to enhance the support programs within the College of Engineering but also to contribute valuable insights to the broader community of faculty development offices.
