College names Distinguished Engineering Alumni for 2017

The College of Engineering at North Carolina State University named the Distinguished Engineering Alumnus award winners for 2017. The recipients are Basil Hassan, senior manager of the Thermal, Fluid, and Aero Sciences Group for Sandia National Laboratories and Alan S. Icenhour, associate laboratory director for the Nuclear Science and Engineering Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Early detection is the goal of the Consortium for Nonproliferation Enabling Capabilities, a partnership funded by the National Nuclear Security Administration and led by NC State. CNEC’s partners comprise seven universities and four national laboratories, all collaborating to stop the illegal proliferation of nuclear weapons.

Gilligan to receive 2017 ANS Arthur Holly Compton Award in Education

Dr. John Gilligan, executive associate dean of engineering, research and graduate programs in the College of Engineering and Distinguished University Professor of Nuclear Engineering at NC State, has been awarded the 2017 Arthur Holly Compton Award in Education by the Education, Training and Workforce Development Division of the American Nuclear Society (ANS). He will receive the award in a ceremony on June 12 at the ANS Annual Meeting in San Francisco.

Narayan, Turinsky elected to National Academy of Engineering

Drs. Jay Narayan and Paul Turinsky will be formally inducted during a ceremony at the NAE’s annual meeting in Washington, D.C. on Oct. 8. Their election will bring the number of NAE members in the College to 17. 

Department of Energy funding will include an upgrade to the PULSTAR reactor operated by the Department of Nuclear Engineering in Burlington Nuclear Engineering Lab.

College leads in funding for nuclear energy research

The College of Engineering at North Carolina State University will receive more than $7.1 million from the Department of Energy to further research on nuclear energy.
