Bitzer and Kim win Holladay Medal

Donald Bitzer, Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Computer Science, and Youngsoo (Richard) Kim, Jimmy D. Clark Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering, received the Alexander Quarles Holladay Medal for Excellence, the highest honor bestowed by NC State and the university’s Board of Trustees. Chancellor Randy Woodson recognized the awardees during 2019 Celebration of Faculty Excellence on May 1.

NC State honored more than 30 faculty members, including Dean Louis Martin-Vega and other engineering faculty members, for their outstanding contributions to the university community during the 2019 Celebration of Faculty Excellence on May 1. The annual event honors faculty who have won prestigious state, national and international awards and created new knowledge and advancements in their respective disciplines.

Research looks to bacteria to help prevent coal ash spills

Spills of coal ash from containment ponds have caused environmental damage to several waterways across the Southeast. Now, engineers from NC State have developed a technique that uses bacteria to produce “biocement” in the ponds, making the coal ash easier to store and limiting the risk of spills.

Kim receives 2018 RJ Reynolds Award

Dr. Youngsoo “Richard” Kim, Jimmy D. Clark Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering (CCEE) at North Carolina State University, is the thirty-fourth recipient of the RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company Award for Excellence in Teaching, Research and Extension.
