Throughout the month of November the Goodnight Scholars Program will feature some of our Native American scholars and alumni in celebration and recognition of Native American Heritage Month.
Active, competitive, and artistic are just three words to describe Goodnight Scholar and Industrial Systems Engineering student Jonathan Moore ’22. If you can’t find Jonathan studying for an exam at one of glass tables within NC State Libraries, you might find him spiking a volleyball with the GS Hitters intramural volleyball team, or belting the NC State alma mater at Carter Finley. Goodnight Scholars Program: Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Jonathan Moore ’22: I am majoring in Industrial and Systems Engineering with a minor in Business Administration. I’m extremely competitive as a result of playing sports with my older brothers. I grew up playing baseball and basketball, but recently I’ve been focusing more on rock climbing, volleyball, basketball and spikeball. Outside of classes and sports, I’m a little all over the place. I’m into photography, drawing, painting, playing guitar and piano, writing, and I recently got into bleaching/painting clothes that I thrift.
If you had to summarize your personality in one sentence, what would it say?
An introverted extrovert with a splash of competitiveness and a dash of playfulness.
What has your favorite memory so far at NC State been?
My favorite memory was the Mountains to Coast trip my sophomore year. When I was deciding on which colleges to attend, I had a few full ride offers on the table. I chose NC State, because of the community that the Goodnight Scholars Program would provide me. That spring break trip was an affirmation of that decision. I know it sounds cliche, but I honestly felt like I began the trip with friends and ended it with a family.
What is one experience you need to have at NC State before you graduate?
Go to a football game! Belting out the alma mater underneath the stadium lights, surrounded by a sea of red, makes you feel like a true member of the Pack.
Where is your favorite place to study on campus, and why?
If I’m trying to buckle down and have an intensive study session, then I love the libraries. There are a few areas where the tables are made of glass. It makes my practice problems a lot easier when I can just draw all over the table.
What Goodnight Scholars Programming event are you most excited about this semester?
Personally, I’ve always loved the Real Leadership events. Although, I haven’t been able to make it to any this semester, I’m hoping to be able to make it to many of them next semester.
Looking 6 months down the road, describe the Jonathan you want to see at graduation from NC State in 2022?
In the end, I want to be prepared, and excited, about the work I’m going into. College is a time of preparation. I do want to be able to look back on my time at NC State with pride, but more importantly, I want to be able to look at my future work and see my purpose.
What are your aspirations after graduation?
Professionally speaking, I hope to go work for a business as a systems engineer, and then work my way into management. In a general sense, I want to be active in my community. God has consistently blessed me with incredible opportunities, and I hope to be able to bless the people around me as well.
How has playing on the GS Hitters team been?
Incredible! My favorite part about it was getting to play alongside other Goodnight scholars that I wouldn’t have normally met. We had a phenomenal team this year, and I really feel like we can win the IM championship next year.
