Why did you choose to study abroad?
Ever since I was younger I always dreamed of having the opportunity to travel both domestically and internationally. When presented with the FYI In Prague program I knew it was something I couldn’t pass up. The program allowed me to get a taste of studying abroad while not committing to a whole semester. After the wonderful experience I had in Prague I am looking forward to studying abroad again, this time for a full semester!
What did you learn about yourself?
The FYI In Prague program taught me many things about myself. One revelation was that I actually was prepared for college, and the transition wasn’t going to be as hard as I thought.
What was one of your favorite parts of your program?
One of my favorite parts of the program was meeting people that were outside the College of Engineering and having the opportunity to immerse myself into a new culture.
What advice do you have to future study abroad students?
My biggest advice for students looking to study abroad is to step outside your comfort zone! You never know the opportunity that could present itself if you just take the time to look.
How were your classes abroad different than if you would have taken them at NC State? Did you take any field trips or do anything outside of the traditional classroom?
The environment in which I took my class in Prague was very different than here at NC State. Rather than being in a restricted classroom setting, we were free to sit in various areas around the NC State Institute in Prague. We also took many trips around the city while in class. Some of these trips included seeing castles and other historical sites, while others allowed us to see the variation in culture between Prague and the U.S.
In what ways did your identity have an impact on your experience abroad?
As I am a first generation college student and my parents were apprehensive in regards to me traveling alone. The FYI In Prague program allowed me to appreciate the travel opportunity more than I otherwise would have.
Is there any advice you would give to other students who share your identity?
Look for resources! College is full of opportunities that are just waiting to be taken! Take advantage of everything you can, and use all available resources when looking for programs!
Where did you find support to navigate any challenges you faced abroad?
The NC State faculty were a tremendous help during my time in Prague and were always there when needed!
Would you do it again?
Making the decision to apply and ultimately attend the FYI in Program was a life changing experience that I would definitely do again!
