10 College of Engineering students named NSF Graduate Research Fellows

Ten students from the College of Engineering at NC State have been named recipients of the prestigious National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Fellowship.

This year, NSF received more than 12,000 applications from the Graduate Fellowship program from around the U.S., with only 2,000 fellowship offers made.

The student recipients have completed or will soon complete their undergraduate degrees at NC State:

  • Danielle Winter, Biological Engineering
  • Bryon Spells, Mechanical Engineering
  • Nicholas Mazzoleni, Mechanical Engineering
  • Jessica Mahinthakumar, Chemical Engineering
  • Andrew Kristof, Chemical Engineering
  • Alex Hsain, Materials Engineering
  • Benjamin Dacus, Nuclear Engineering
  • Jared Tippens, Mechanical Engineering; now at Georgia Institute of Technology
  • Yu Chin Chan, Mechanical Engineering; now at Northwestern University

One student earned an undergraduate degree at another institution and has chosen to conduct graduate studies at NC State:

  • Alireza Dayerizadeh, Electrical Engineering

The fellowship program recognizes outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based master’s and doctoral degrees.

The fellows will receive a three-year annual stipend of $34,000, a $12,000 allowance for tuition and fees, opportunities for international research and professional development, and the freedom to conduct their own research at any accredited U.S. institution of graduate education they choose.
