College of Engineering student teams place at annual LuLu eGames startup competition

LuLu eGames startup winners

Seven ventures submitted by NC State College of Engineering students came away with top place finishes from the 2017 LuLu eGames startup competition held in April.

Winning teams that included students from the College are:

VieMetrics | James Dieffenderfer, UNC/NC State Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME), Eric Beppler, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), and Charles Hood (ECE)

The development of a low-cost, portable spirometer that can potentially predict asthma attacks. First place ($10,000) New Venture category, first place ($5,000) Social Impact category and first place ($5,000) Design and Prototype category.

SaKaroTec | Scott Frazee, Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (CBE) and Karthik Narasimhan, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE)

An innovative new way to preserve red blood cells that will revolutionize the blood supply industry. Second place ($7,000) New Venture category.

BYT No Pressure | Bhavana Kaki (CBE), Elyse Pizzella (CBE), Ashle Page (CBE) and Minh Nguyen (ECE)

An enhanced dental guard that combines a slim fit structure with a maximum pressure-absorbing design to relieve pain from involuntary clenching and grinding. Third place ($5,000) New Venture category.

RipeNow, LLC | John Malatras (ECE) and Alexander Tulenko (MAE)

A platform that connects restaurants with crowdsourced produce from local farms. First place ($5,000) Built on Cloud category.

Medtraq | Alexander Leonov (ECE)

A handwashing compliance system that aims to reduce the $9.8 billion in preventable healthcare costs associated with hospital-acquired infections. Second place ($3,000) Built on Cloud category.

Rythcor | Travis Murray (ECE), Alexander Bless (MAE), Brian Graham (MAE), and Jack Dodd (ECE)

PulseAware by Rhythcor aims to combat the biggest killer among firefighters — heart attacks. Second place ($3,000) in Social Impact category and third place ($2,000) Design and Prototype category.
