Research meets art
From the work NC State faculty members and students conduct in laboratories and in the field, beautiful images sometimes emerge.
The University has begun recognizing this beauty with an annual NC State Research Image Contest. The 2017 contest winners were announced in August, and the College of Engineering was well represented.
The contest was open to faculty and staff members, graduate students and postdoctoral researchers. The program is funded by NC State’s Graduate School and Office of Research, Innovation, and Economic Development, with support from University Communications and the College of Sciences. Entries were received in four categories: Graphics and Illustration, Microscopy, Photography and Video.
Dr. Richard Spontak, Distinguished Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, received second place in the Graphics and Illustration Faculty and Staff category and first place in the Microscopy Faculty and Staff category.
Dheepak Nandkishore Khatri, a master’s student in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, received second place in the Graphics and Illustration Graduate Students and Postdocs category.
Amber Hubbard, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, won second place in the Photography Graduate Students and Postdocs category for an image she produced with Sally Van Gorder, a former graduate student in the College of Design.
Yixin Liu, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Textile Engineering, received an honorable mention in the Photography Graduate Students and Postdocs category.
Vivek Bharambe, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, received an honorable mention in the Photography Graduate Students and Postdocs category.
Dr. Shreyas Narsipur, a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, won second place in the Video Graduate Students and Postdocs category.
