Dr. Orlin Velev, INVISTA Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Professor at NC State University, has been named the recipient of the 2017 Andreas Acrivos Award for Professional Progress in Chemical Engineering by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE).
The award recognizes an individual’s outstanding progress and accomplishments in fundamental or applied chemical engineering research. Velev will be presented with a plaque and $5,000 at the Honors Ceremony on Sunday, October 29, during the AIChE 2017 Annual Meeting in Minneapolis, MN.
Velev’s research group focuses on fundamental and exploratory projects in colloids, microfluidics and nanoscience. A major emphasis is made on the controlled on-chip assembly of colloidal particles into advanced materials and microscopic functional structures.
He received an M.S. in chemical physics and theoretical chemistry (1989) and a Ph.D. in physical chemistry (1996) from Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” in Bulgaria.
