Dr. Orlin Velev, INVISTA Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Professor at North Carolina State University has been named a Fellow of the Materials Research Society (MRS).

MRS is a renowned leader in the advancement of interdisciplinary materials research with almost 16,000 members from 90 countries and is dedicated to partnering with organizations worldwide for the advancement of materials research. The fellowship recognizes members whose dedicated and distinguished contributions to the advancement of materials research is internationally recognized and embodies the society’s ideals of service and accomplishment. The maximum number of new Fellow appointments each year is limited to 0.2 percent of the current MRS regular membership.

This will be Velev’s second induction to honorary membership in a prestigious society after he was first named a Fellow of the American Chemical Society in 2011.

Velev leads a research group at NC State that focuses on colloids, microfluidics and nanoscience with an emphasis on controlled assembly of colloidal particles into advanced materials and microscopic functional structures.

He received an M.S. in chemical physics and theoretical chemistry (1989) and a Ph.D. in physical chemistry (1996) from Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” in Bulgaria.
