Thousands convene at fall 2016 engineering career fair

The fall 2016 NC State Engineering Career Fair was held at the Jane S. McKimmon Center for Extension and Continuing Education, September 20-21. This event sees thousands of students from NC State as well as other schools from across the United States. From freshman to graduate, the career fair has opportunities for all who attend, whether it is an internship, full-time employment, or networking experience.

Graduate student becomes research associate at national lab

Dr. Tedi-Marie Usher began her journey with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) as a graduate student who was interested in materials science and engineering. Over the course of her graduate studies, Usher went to ORNL several times to conduct experiments that eventually led to her decision to take a position as a postdoctoral research associate there in April, 2016.

Researchers at NC State have determined that the surface texture of gallium nitride (GaN) materials can influence the health of nearby cells. The work is significant because GaN is a material of interest for developing new devices that can control cellular behavior.

Researchers have developed a multi-layered “sensing skin” to detect corrosive or otherwise harmful substances in structures. The skin can also detect cracks and other structural flaws that are invisible to the naked eye.

Outstanding graduate continues research, receives national award

During his time at NC State, Dr. Kenneth “Kenny” Mineart was a leader in the lab and promoted safe, efficient operations. Formerly a graduate student, teaching assistant for three years and summer co-instructor, Mineart’s outstanding qualities as both a researcher and instructor were evident to his students and advisors.
