Grant elected as AIChE Fellow

Dr. Christine Grant, associate dean of faculty development and special initiatives and professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering in the College of Engineering at North Carolina State University, has been named a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE).

Founded in 1908, AIChE is the world’s leading organization for chemical engineering professionals, with more than 45,000 members from more than 90 countries.  Fellows are elite members who have practiced chemical engineering for more than 25 years and made significant contributions to the profession.

Grant, who has been a member of AIChE for 25 years, is one of four African-American women on chemical engineering faculties nationwide holding the title of full professor. She has previously served as chair of the Minority Affairs Committee (MAC) and has received the MAC Eminent Chemical Engineers Award and the MAC National Distinguished Service Award from AIChE. She has also served on the Board of Directors and the Chemical Technology Operating Council for AIChE.

Widely recognized as a leader in mentoring, Grant has received numerous top honors, including the National Science Foundation Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring; the National Technical Association’s Top Women in Science and Engineering Award; and the Stanley C. Israel Regional Award for Advancing Diversity in the Chemical Sciences from the American Chemical Society.

Grant is also the founder and director of the Promoting Underrepresented Presence On Science and Engineering Faculties (PURPOSE) Institute at NC State, an organization dedicated to increasing the number and success of engineering faculty members from underrepresented groups.

She received her BS in chemical engineering from Brown University in 1984 and her MS and PhD in chemical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1986 and 1989, respectively. She joined the NC State faculty in 1989.
