NC State SHPE chapter honored at regional conference

The North Carolina State University chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) was recently honored at the 2013 Regional Leadership Development Conference (RLDC) at Georgia Tech in Atlanta.

The NC State chapter won the Best Overall Medium Chapter award for Region 7 of SHPE, which includes all student chapters throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. The chapter was recognized for demonstrating the community involvement, pride, and vitality that characterize the larger SHPE mission.

SHPE, a national organization founded in Los Angeles in 1974, promotes the educational success, economic opportunity, and social equity of Hispanics in science, engineering, and technology professions. Its regional conferences support chapter leaders through leadership skills training and networking opportunities.

The SHPE chapter at NC State aims to increase the enrollment, retention, and graduation of Hispanic engineering and applied sciences students. The chapter also provides a forum for social support and information exchange and offers academic counseling and postgraduate professional development for those students.
