Dr. Hans Conrad, professor emeritus in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at North Carolina State University, will receive the 2012 ASM Gold Medal Award from ASM International, a leading society for materials scientists and engineers.

The award recognizes Conrad for his knowledge and versatility in the application of science in his field, as well as his abilities diagnosing and solving diverse materials problems.

Conrad joined NC State in 1981 and retired 18 years ago, but he continues to perform groundbreaking research on lasers, cold-welding materials in the vacuum of space, semiconductivity, superconductivity and ceramics. Conrad has written or co-written more than 450 scientific papers and articles.

His past accolades include the TMS Structural Materials Division Distinguished Materials Scientist Award, the NC State Alumni Association Outstanding Research Award and the Alcoa Foundation Engineering Research Achievement Award. He is a Fellow of the American Society for Materials and The Materials Society (TMS).

Conrad received his bachelor’s degree in metallurgical engineering from the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1943. He received his master’s and doctoral degrees in engineering metallurgy from Yale University in 1951 and 1955, respectively.

The ASM Gold Medal is among the most prestigious awards of the ASM International Society. Established in 1913, ASM International works to meet the technical and educational needs of its members and the entire worldwide materials community.
