Velev named ACS Fellow

Dr. Orlin D. Velev, INVISTA Professor in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at North Carolina State University, has been named a Fellow of the American Chemical Society (ACS).

Velev will be honored at the ACS National Meeting in August for his outstanding achievements and contributions to his profession, as well as his service as a member of ACS. Velev will also be recognized in the August 2011 issue of Chemical & Engineering News.

Velev came to NC State in 2001 and has established himself as a research leader in colloid science and engineering, as well as in the assembly of biosensors and nano- and microstructures with photonic, optical and electrical functionality. He leads the Velev Research Group at NC State.

He is a past recipient of the Alcoa Foundation Distinguished Engineering Research Award, the Alumni Association Outstanding Research Award, the Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award, the National Science Foundation CAREER Award and the Ralph E. Powe Award.

Velev received his M.Sc. in chemical physics and theoretical chemistry in 1989 and his PhD degree in physical chemistry in 1996 from the University of Sofia, Bulgaria.

Founded in 1876, ACS is the world’s largest society for chemical professionals with membership of more than 163,000 chemists. ACS is at the forefront of authoritative scientific information and chemical enterprise. Its board of directors created the ACS Fellows Program in 2008.
