NC State student receives Women in Aerospace Foundation Scholarship

Whitney Q. Lohmeyer, an aerospace engineering senior at North Carolina State University, has been named the recipient of the inaugural Women in Aerospace (WIA) Foundation Scholarship.

Lohmeyer received a $1,000 scholarship for the 2010-2011 academic year at the 25th Annual WIA Banquet, which was held Oct. 26 in Washington, DC. The scholarship is awarded to women who are interested in careers in the aerospace field and pursuing higher education degrees in engineering, math or science.

Lohmeyer was selected to receive the WIA Scholarship based on her academic achievement, career goals, diversity of activities and leadership both on and off of campus.

Actively involved in undergraduate research under Dr. Fred DeJarnette, professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and campus director of the NC Space Grant Consortium, Lohmeyer conducts research in the field of hypersonic aero/thermodynamics. She is also a 2010-2011 North Carolina Space Grant Undergraduate Research Scholarship recipient.

Lohmeyer holds leadership positions in the NC State Chapters of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and the Society of Women Engineers (SWE). She has also been involved with the lacrosse and rowing club teams, along with other extracurricular activities.

The WIA was founded in 1985 and is a non-profit organization created to educate the public about the importance of space exploration and technology and to increase awareness in, and knowledge of, the scientific fields that will develop inventions and intelligence that will lead to improved space travel, satellite technology and other applications of space use.
