NC State receives $1.5 million from Department of Energy for nuclear engineering research

Researchers in the College of Engineering at North Carolina State University are receiving two grants totaling $1.5 million from the Department of Energy (DOE) for nuclear research and development.

The larger grant, $1.1 million, is for research in novel engineered refractory materials for advanced reactor applications. Researchers will also receive $418,000 for the development of an advanced computational fluid dynamics technology for the next-generation nuclear reactor system analysis and safety margin characterization code.

The projects were among 42 receiving DOE grants totaling $38 million. The DOE program will provide funding for three to four years and will help advance nuclear education and develop the next generation of nuclear technologies.

NC State began operating the country’s first public research reactor in 1953 and its program has consistently appeared in top 10 national rankings.
