Engineering a Better Tomorrow

Math Placement

Getting off to a good start in math is very important for new engineering students. If you look at any engineering curriculum, you'll see that calculus is the first required math. It's also the prerequisite for physics, which is required for matriculation.

SAT-II Math, Level 2 and AP Calculus Scores

There are several ways to start in calculus. One way is to submit a score of 550 or better on the SAT-II Math, Level 2; another way is to submit an AP calculus score of at least "2." We strongly recommend that you take the SAT-II unless you already have an AP calculus score of "2" or better.

If you took pre-calculus in your junior year, you can take the SAT-II Math, Level 2 any time during the senior year; it is not required for admission but it is very important for math placement. If you are taking pre-calculus in your senior year, you can take the SAT-II Math as late as May, and we will have your score in time for New Student Orientation.

NC State Math Placement Test

NC State offers a math placement test which you can take on line before New Student Orientation; an adequate score on this placement test can also place you in calculus in the first semester. For all math placement information go to placement information on the Admissions website.

If you do not have any of the above math placement scores, you should consider taking a college level pre-calculus course before you enroll. These courses are available in junior and community colleges or other four-year institutions, whichever is more convenient for you. You would need to have a transcript sent to the Admissions Office showing that you have completed this course. If you do not meet one of the requirements for starting in calculus, you will be required to take a pre-calculus course in your first semester, and this will delay matriculation.
