Verd Cunningham

Home Town: Columbia, S.C.

Verd CunninghamVerd came to NC State for engineering in 2005, starting in mechanical engineering. As many students do when they learn more about engineering, she switched to biological and agricultural engineering (environmental concentration) in her junior year. Verd discovered that she liked engineering, but wanted to be more hands-on and involved with the environment.

During her stay at NC State, Verd also completed the music minor for performance (violin) and played with the Raleigh Civic Symphony. She served as an Engineering Ambassador to new and potential students; participated in the Women in Science & Engineering (WISE) program as a mentor to first year women; and participated in the University Scholars Program, serving on the Scholars Council. In addition, Verd joined the Sailing Club, the American Society of Agricultural & Biological Engineers (ASABE) and the American Water Resources Association (AWRA).

After graduating in May 2009, Verd helped with the College of Engineering Summer Middle and Elementary School Camps. She will remain in Raleigh and began work with CH2M Hill as an Environmental Engineer in July!

Engineering

(n) Engineering involves the application of creativity in partnership with math, science, social studies, language arts and fine arts to search for quicker, better and less expensive ways to use the forces and materials of nature to meet today's challenges. Engineers are problem solvers who use every resource possible to bring into existence things and ideas that they imagine.
