We know how important a role you play in encouraging your child’s interests and abilities and introducing her/him to potential careers. We hope that the following information and tools will be of help to you as you assist your child in exploring engineering.

How do I prepare my student for an engineering degree?

Is your student creative and interested in why things are the way they are? Does she show an interest in her science, math or technology classes? Does he like to find more than one way to solve a problem? Does she want to find a way to change the world? Maybe your student should consider engineering as a career. How do you guide your student in school to prepare to study engineering?

  1. Encourage them to take a variety of science classes. Engineers do well when they get chemistry and physics while still in high school.
  2. Encourage them to take as much math as they can. If they can get through pre-calculus, introduction to college math or beyond in high school, that will be helpful.
  3. Learn how to advocate for your student in math by downloading and reading the Parents Booklet (PDF, 400 KB).
  4. Encourage them to learn what engineers do in their jobs. There are many web sites where they can explore. Look for links on this site.
