Biological Engineering - Bioprocessing Workshop
Biological Engineering is the combined application of engineering principles and biological sciences. From molecules and microbes to large ecosystems, Biological Engineers design solutions to real-world problems. Working with faculty and engineering students, participants will have a hands-on research experience using current technologies. This summer program is designed to give students an understanding of the diverse topics of biological engineering while allowing them to focus on an interest area, the bioprocess engineering option or the environmental engineering option.
Participants in the bioprocessing workshop will be introduced to the basics of biomanufacturing and will apply these processes in a weeklong laboratory project. Students will produce industrial enzymes during the fermentation of microorganisms on renewable resources and learn about applications of enzymes in the dairy industry. Participants will understand the importance of determining the optimal temperature and growing environment in order to produce the maximum yield of enzyme activity. Students will conduct analytical assays to measure produced enzyme activity and will gain an understanding of the multidisciplinary nature of Biological Engineering through collaboration with the Animal Science Department. All BE participants will enjoy a trip to the NC Coast to see Biological Engineering in action!
