Science & Engineering Workshop
Materials are everywhere - in the clothes and shoes that we wear, the houses and buildings in which we live and work, and the electronic devices that allow us to communicate. The list is endless. Materials Scientists and Engineers discover and develop, as well as investigate ways to utilize and process, materials. MSE encompasses a full spectrum of materials: metals, ceramics, polymers (plastics), semiconductors, and combinations of materials called composites. Most fields of work or study incorporate MSE!
During the MSE workshop, students will participate in one of several project tracks. Last year students were involved in either a 'CSI: Miami' Investigation Project to determine the materials and cause of failure in failed hurricane shutters, or an Artillery Shell Project to determine the cause of a defect in the manufacture of the shell.
This year, students will investigate nanotechnology, may suit up for the clean room, and will use will use various techniques such as SEM/EDS analysis, metallography, optical microscopy and mechanical testing, as well as operate a Scanning Electron
Microscope (SEM), to complete the projects. Nano-icecream and day trips to the SBI and Progress Energy will round out the week.
Any student who is accepted into the freshman engineering class at NCSU as a Materials Science and Engineering student, and has previously attended the MSE Summer Program Workshop, will be offered a freshman year scholarship.
The Materials Science & Engineering Workshop (ASM Materials Camp) was offered for the first time in 2005, but in 2006 became a full residential one-week program along with the other workshops offered in NC State Engineering. Funding for the program is provided by the ASM Materials Education Foundation and the Kenan Institude for Engineering, Technology, & Science.
