Recognition of Graduates Event

Many engineering and computer science societies’ codes of ethics include statements of the professional responsibilities of their working members. The purpose of this ceremony is to remind and encourage NC State College of Engineering students to be cognizant of these responsibilities as they embark on the professional phase of their lives. In addition, we wish to celebrate the conclusion of their time on campus and wish them well in future endeavors as they represent themselves, their families, the college and NC State itself.

2024 Keynote Speaker — To Be Announced

2023 Keynote Speaker

Dr. Joy Johnson (ECE ’07) | Engineering Manager at Apple

Joy is a Greensboro native and 2007 graduate of North Carolina State University with dual undergraduate degrees in Electrical & Computer Engineering where she was awarded a Park Scholarship and NSF National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network (NNIN) undergraduate research fellowship.

She is also a 2015 graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with her doctorate in Electrical Engineering & Computer Science. She was a National Science Foundation Fellow and Intel GEM Ph.D. Fellow while at MIT where her research focused on theoretical semiconductor process modeling, inventing environmentally benign fabrication processes and electrochemical energy systems.

Following graduate school, Joy transitioned from researching physical models to building commercial ones in software – leading mobile development at an MIT-founded music technology startup, as a partner. After leading the development of two mobile products at AudioCommon, she transitioned to the west coast to Apple’s Special Projects Group where she worked in HW engineering experience prototyping. However, she transitioned back to her research roots in Apple’s PPO (Panel, Process, Optics) in emerging display technology development as a senior HW Engineering Manager where she leads a team of engineers helping to research hand develop novel thin film on panel solutions for optical enhancement of Apple’s next generation of display technologies.

She has served on the NC State University College of Engineering Young Alumni board and on the boards of STEM-related non-profits focused on providing technical, research experiences for minorities and women, including the INTech Camp for Girls and iTREK. When not in the lab, you can find her running, flying, or spending time with her large family!
