NEW FACULTY ORIENTATION WORKSHOP

Have you been a College of Engineering (COE) or College of Physical & Mathematical Sciences (PAMS) faculty member at North Carolina State University for two years or less?

Could you use tips on building and maintaining a successful research program and teaching more effectively and efficiently from some of the best researchers and teachers on campus?

Would it help you to know about all the campus resources available to you?

Do you wonder how to manage your research, teaching, and service responsibilities and still have a life?

If your answer to any of the above questions is "YES," you will benefit from a New Faculty Orientation Workshop sponsored by the two colleges on Thursday-Friday, August 9-10 and Monday-Tuesday, August 13-14, at the Monteith Research Center on Centennial Campus.

This workshop has been presented annually since 2000.  Workshop topics include:

  • getting your career off to a good start
  • starting a research program and getting it funded
  • attracting and working with graduate students
  • presenting and publishing your work
  • planning a course and getting it off to a good start
  • lecturing effectively
  • getting students active in class
  • making up good assignments and tests
  • dealing with a variety of student problems
  • managing your time and balancing the demands of research, teaching, and personal life, and meeting the criteria for promotion and tenure

All topics will be presented in a practical and interactive way.  You will have a chance to work on your own research proposal and one of your courses and get expert feedback on both.   Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided each day.
