In her lecture she will introduce the various analytical tools used by scientists to unravel fake paintings and will illustrate the relevance of such analyses in a number of specific examples. She also will discuss the celebrated Vermeer forgeries carried out by Van Meegeren and will make a comparison between the different approaches of the art historian, the curator and the scientist in their study of paintings. Stylistic examination, as well as provenance studies, complement the scientific analyses.
The lecture is hosted by the Gregg Museum of Art & Design and by the College of Humanities and Social Science.

Color: Its Significance and Production in Ancient Egypt
Dr. Jehane Ragai, professor of chemistry at The American University in Cairo,
will give a lecture on the study of color in Ancient Egyptian culture, Wednesday,
April 9, at 4:00 p.m. in Room 1007 in Engineering Buidling I on Centennial
Campus.
The lecture will illustrate the complementary contributions of the humanities
and science to the study of color in Ancient Egyptian culture. Ancient Egyptians
were primarily concerned with a precise language of color, which in spite of
being predominantly symbolic, later acquired aesthetic connotations. Such a
language found full expression through carefully controlled means of production
and manufacture.
This lecture is hosted by the departments of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering
and Chemistry.
Lecture Start Time: 4:00 PM (Refreshments will be served at 3:30 p.m. in Room 2002, Engineering
Building I. )

Steven Berlin Johnson, a noted author, social critic and technologist, will
kick off a new series of speakers at North Carolina State University on March
11.
His address begins "Solving. Evolving. Engineering: The Progress Energy Distinguished Speakers Series" (SEE). The series was created in the College of Engineering to foster dialogue around engineering's capacity to solve some of the world's greatest challenges.

TITLE: The Evolving Mission of the U.S.
Department of Energy
ABSTRACT:
R. Shane Johnson discusses future directions of the U.S. Department of Energy.
What are the major research and development initiatives from the Office of
Nuclear Energy and what role do universities play in their development? How
is the U.S. re-asserting leadership in nuclear technology development on a
global scale?
Mr. Johnson is the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Department
of Energy's Office of Nuclear Energy. Since 2000, he has led the Office's nuclear
technology initiatives, serving a key leadership role in the initiation and
management of such programs as the Nuclear Power 2010 Program, Generation IV
Nuclear Energy Systems Initiative, the Advanced Fuel Cycle Initiative, and
the Nuclear Hydrogen Initiative. R. Shane Johnson has also been active at the
international level. For example, he played a pivotal role in the formation
of the Generation IV International Forum (GIF). GIF is an international collective
of ten leading nations and the European Union's Euratom, dedicated to developing
advanced reactor and fuel cycle technologies. Johnson currently serves as the
acting chairman of GIF, and has served as the U.S. representative to the policy
committee since 2001.
