Dr. Gregory Washington, a North Carolina State University engineering alumnus, has been named interim dean of the College of Engineering at Ohio State University. His appointment began in October and is effective through Sept. 30, 2010.

Washington earned his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in mechanical engineering at NC State in 1989, 1991 and 1994, respectively. In 1990 he was recognized by Ebony magazine as one of the top 10 African American students in the country.

At Ohio State, Washington has served as professor of mechanical engineering and was the associate dean for research from 2005 to 2008. He also developed or co-developed four new courses and co-designed a new curriculum in hybrid electric vehicle drives. He joined the Ohio State faculty in 1995.

Washington is internationally known for his research on ultra-lightweight structurally active antenna systems and other structures that involve the use of “smart materials.” He has conducted research for many organizations, including NASA, the National Science Foundation, the Air Force Research Laboratory and General Motors.

Washington has authored more than 120 publications in journals, edited volumes and conference proceedings. His numerous research and teaching awards include the NSF CAREER Award, the Lumley Research Award and the Ohio State Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching.
