Dr. Mladen A. Vouk, professor of computer science and technical director of the Center for Advanced Computing and Communications (CACC) at NC State University, has been named associate vice provost for the Information Technology Division (ITD). ITD provides essential systems and services to NC State such as a state-of-the-art technology network, computing account privileges and help desk support.
Vouk brings to his new appointment extensive experience in commercial software production and academic computing. With over 150 publications, his research interests include software engineering, scientific computing, computer-based instruction and high-performance networks. He recently was instrumental in helping NC State obtain an IBM Shared University Research grant, which will provide for the purchase of IBM equipment and support of specified projects (http://www.engr.ncsu.edu/news/gifts/vouk2.html).
He is associated with a number of NC State faculties, including the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, E-Commerce, Information Security, Genomics, Bioniformatics Program and the Operations Research program. In addition to being the technical director of the CACC, he is co-founder and co-director of the Computer Science Software Systems and Engineering Laboratory and founder, former director and current member of the NC State Multimedia and Networking Laboratory.
Vouk’s many awards and honors include the IFIP Silver Core award from the International Federation for Information Processing for services rendered. He also is a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
Vouk received his B.S. in physics and his Ph.D. in solid state physics from the University of London, Kings College, in 1972 and 1976, respectively.
One of his main goals as ITD’s new associate vice provost will be to strengthen the link between ITD and the university’s teaching and research missions.
