Velev named INVISTA professor

Dr. Velev

Dr. Orlin Velev has been named the INVISTA Professor in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at North Carolina State University.

Velev came to NC State in 2001 and has established himself as a research leader in colloid science and engineering, as well as in the assembly of nano- and microstructures with photonic, optical and electrical functionality and biosensors. He leads the Velev Research Group at NC State.

“We are incredibly proud of Dr. Velev’s work and all that he has accomplished,” said Dr. Louis A. Martin-Vega, dean of the College of Engineering. “INVISTA's generous support of the College and our outstanding faculty is most appreciated.”

The professorship was established by INVISTA to support a professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. The Wichita, Kan.-based company is one of the world’s largest integrated producers of polymers and fibers, primarily for nylon, spandex and polyester applications.

Velev is a past recipient of the Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award, the National Science Foundation CAREER Award and the Ralph E. Powe Award. He received his M.S. in chemical physics and theoretical chemistry in 1989 and his Ph.D. in physical chemistry in 1996 from the University of Sofia, Bulgaria.
