Utility workers and excavators who need training in accurately detecting signals from buried utilities can attend a one-day workshop held by the Construction Automation and Robotics Laboratory (CARL) at North Carolina State University and Underground Focus Magazine.
The course is offered on five dates this year: March 21, May 18, July 18, September 19 and November 21. All will meet from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the McKimmon Center on the N.C. State campus.
Participants will learn locating skills in problem areas such as abandoned facilities, congested areas, fiber optic cables and conduit runs. Topics covered will include manhole safety, multifrequency active and passive locating, sweeping techniques, job planning and focus and contractor/excavator relationships.
Gary Guthrie, owner of Utility Technical Services in Wilmington, N.C., is the workshop instructor. The workshop is supervised by Dr. Leonhard Bernold, associate professor of civil engineering and director of CARL.
The cost for the one-day session is $30. Participants earn Continuing Education Units, which will be kept on record at N.C. State.
