North Carolina State University College of Engineering recently held its summer Student Introduction to Engineering (SITE) program to introduce high school students to engineering. Over 200 students from North Carolina and six other states attended demonstrations, lectures and laboratory experiments and participated in hands-on laboratory exercises as part of the SITE program.
Held in two one-week sessions, from June 16 -27, the program offered rising juniors and seniors a chance to explore interests in chemical engineering, electrical and computer engineering, materials science, mechanical and aerospace engineering and nuclear engineering. In one hands-on exercise, students used physics and engineering principles learned during morning sessions to create a mock battle complete with catapults, tennis balls and water balloons. The event, "Renaissance Science on the Battlefield," was part of the students' introduction to mechanical and aerospace engineering.
