Engineering Students Take to the Skies November 17

People who design airplanes should know what it takes to fly them.

That’s why about 35 N.C. State Aerospace Engineering students will grab the controls high above Johnston County Airport on Saturday as part of the Student Introductory Flight Initiative. The event is a great opportunity for aerospace engineers to get hands-on experience at the controls of an airplane.

Before they take off, students will attend a flight briefing where they’ll learn about controls, instruments, and what to expect when they’re in the air. Then students will hit the skies in groups of three, with each student piloting for 20 minutes and riding for an additional 40 minutes.

The event is divided into morning and afternoon sessions. Both include a briefing, ground school and the flight. The first session begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 1 p.m. Students eat lunch from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. The second session runs from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Students will be available for interviews.

The event is sponsored by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
