Schwartz named MSE department head

Dr. Schwartz

Dr. Justin Schwartz has been named head of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and Kobe Steel Distinguished Professor at North Carolina State University, effective Aug. 16.

Schwartz replaces Dr. Michael Rigsbee, who is stepping down as department head and will continue to serve as professor of materials science and engineering. Rigsbee has led the department since 1998.

An internationally renowned expert in the field of superconducting materials and systems, Schwartz comes to NC State from Florida State University (FSU), where he is currently the Jack E. Crow Professor of Engineering. A faculty member of FSU since 1993, his experience includes serving as senior research advisor to the vice president for research and leader of the High Temperature Superconductor (HTS) Magnets and Materials Group and the HTS Conductor Development Group at the FSU National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL).

Schwartz has received numerous research and education awards and has served as principal investigator or co-principal investigator on more than $11 million in grants and contracts throughout his career. He is a strong proponent of interdisciplinary research and his accomplishments range from being part of a research group that established the world record for magnetic field generation by a superconducting material to leading an initiative with NHMFL educators and high school teachers to develop and implement a secondary school curriculum in superconductivity.

He received his Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from MIT in 1990.
