Dr. Sami H. Rizkalla, Distinguished Professor of Civil Engineering and Construction and the director of the Constructed Facilities Laboratory (CFL) at North Carolina State University, will present the keynote address at The Japan Carbon Fiber Manufacturing Association’s 21st Session of the Composite Material Seminar in Tokyo on February 19. The theme of the seminar is the application of carbon fiber recycling to transportation.

Rizkalla's research includes the design, construction and performance of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures and bridges. He has recently focused his attention on the innovative use of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) materials for rehabilitation, strengthening and repair of bridges and structures, as well as new construction.

Rizkalla is a Fellow of numerous professional organizations, including the American Concrete Institution (ACI), the International Institute for FRP in Construction, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering and the Engineering Institute of Canada. He is a professional member of the Precast/Prestressed Institute (PCI) and received PCI's Harry H. Edwards Industry Advancement Award in 1998 and the Martin P. Korn Award in 2007. On March 30, 2008, at the ACI Spring Convention in Los Angeles, he will receive the Joe W. Kelly Award in recognition of his “more than 30 years of dedication to concrete education and research in concrete technology,” particularly his “pioneering contributions to the use of FRP in reinforced and prestressed concrete.”

Rizkalla received his master's and doctoral degrees in civil engineering from NC State in 1974 and 1976, respectively.
