College of Engineering climbs in U.S. News undergraduate rankings

The College of Engineering at North Carolina State University ranked 28th among the nation's engineering schools in the most recent rankings of undergraduate programs published by U.S. News & World Report. The College ranked 29th last year.

Among public colleges of engineering the College ranked 16th, up from 17th last year. Among Atlantic Coast Conference schools, NC State's College of Engineering ranked fifth.

The rankings were published last week in the magazine's annual “America's Best Colleges” edition.

U.S. News also published rankings for specialty engineering programs, and NC State ranked in the following areas:

The rankings are separate from the graduate rankings published by U.S. News earlier this year. In that survey, the College ranked 30th among the nation's engineering schools, up from 34th a year ago.

The College of Engineering at NC State is among the largest in the nation with more than 5,000 undergraduate students enrolled each year. The College annually ranks among the nation's top ten in bachelor's degrees awarded, total number of engineering degrees awarded, and bachelor's degrees awarded to women and African Americans.

The undergraduate rankings are based solely on the judgments of deans and senior faculty at the nation's engineering schools. U.S. News surveyed the deans and faculty members in spring 2008.

Prospective students often use the U.S. News rankings to help them decide which school to attend.
