Rajala Named Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs in College of Engineering at NC State

Dr. Sarah A. Rajala, professor of electrical and computer engineering and associate dean of academic affairs for the College of Engineering, has been named associate dean for research and graduate programs in the College of Engineering at NC State University, effective October 14. Rajala replaces Dr. John G. Gilligan, who was recently named vice chancellor of research and graduate studies for the university.

Rajala has served as associate dean of academic affairs since August 1996. She is also the NC State site coordinator for the Southeastern University and College Coalition for Engineering Education (SUCCEED) and the program manager for the Image Processing Industry/University Research Center for Communications and Signal Processing. She joined the NC State faculty in 1979 and was the director of the Center for Advanced Computing and Communication at NC State from 1993-96.

An internationally recognized expert in image and video processing, Rajala’s research interests include engineering education, the analysis and processing of images and image sequences with application to the area of color imaging, image coding/compression, motion estimation and target acquisition and tracking.

Rajala was elected to the Academy of Outstanding Electrical Engineers at Michigan Technological University in 1997 and won the Sigma Xi Young Researcher Award in 1987. She is a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and senior member of the Society of Women Engineers.

Rajala received her B.S. in electrical engineering from Michigan Technological University in 1974, and her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Rice University in 1977 and 1979, respectively.
