Dr. Annie Antón, associate professor of computer science at North Carolina State University and director of ThePrivacyPlace.org, and Dr. Julie Earp, associate professor of information technology in the College of Management, are conducting an online Internet privacy survey to gather information on Internet privacy policies and user values. Supported by a National Science Foundation Information Technology Research grant, the survey evaluates the views and opinions of individuals concerning privacy issues on the Internet. Results from the survey will be used to help create guidelines for clear, concise website privacy policies.
Founded by Antón, ThePrivacyPlace.org is an multidisciplinary team of researchers from NC State’s departments of Computer Science and Business Management, the Georgia Tech College of Computing, the Purdue University Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security, and the University of Lugano Communications Sciences Department. The team works to gather and disseminate information and create tools and techniques that help Internet technology (IT) professionals and policy makers bring policies and system requirements into better alignment.
The team, which includes computer science graduate student Matthew Vail, hopes to have several thousand respondents to the survey. To encourage participation, respondents will have an opportunity to register for a chance to win several prizes, including $50 Amazon.com gift certificates and IBM-sponsored giveaways. Participants must be at least 18 years old. The survey can be accessed at http://survey.theprivacyplace.org/.
