Roberto Nunez, lecturer and senior construction extension specialist in the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering at North Carolina State University, has received the American Concrete Institute (ACI) Certification Award.

The award was established in 2004 to recognize individuals and organizations that have made notable contributions to the advancement of ACI certification. The institute's certification programs are designed to form a minimum qualification for people employed within the concrete construction industry. The ACI, founded in 1904 and headquartered Michigan, works to advance concrete knowledge by conducting seminars, managing certification programs, and publishing technical documents.

Nunez has been recognized for his efforts in developing certification programs nationally and internationally.   His work includes the award-winning ACI-NCDOT Concrete School that provides training and ACI accreditations to both NC State students and industry concrete professionals. Nunez also developed successful ACI certification programs in Ecuador, Panama and Guatemala.

Nunez is the director of the civil engineering Construction Systems Laboratory, co-director of the civil engineering Undergraduate Concrete Laboratory and assists NC State's Constructed Facilities Laboratory in business development activities.   He has been heavily involved in programs to assist Spanish-speaking workers in North Carolina's construction industry.

Nunez has more than 25 years of international experience in civil infrastructure and is a registered professional engineer in several U.S. states and Ecuador.   He is the co-founder of IQ Contracting, LLC, a Raleigh concrete contractor, where he is responsible for financial and business practices and construction safety. He holds master's degrees in civil engineering from NC State and business administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
