Engineering students honored with NSF Graduate Research Fellowships

A record 19 students from North Carolina State University were awarded National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships--and 16 of these students are engineers.

The Graduate Research Fellowship (GRF) program invests in the graduate education of a select group of students from diverse backgrounds who demonstrate the potential to successfully complete graduate degree programs in disciplines relevant to the mission of the National Science Foundation (NSF). The three-year awards include a stipend of $30,000 per year, as well as an educational allowance that covers tuition, fees and health insurance.

This year marks an increase of more than 200% over the number of GRFs earned by NC State students in 2007. In comparison to students at peer institutions across the nation, NC State ranked second only to Cornell University in the total number of undergraduates honored.

"It is readily apparent that undergraduate research, scholarly accomplishment, and intensive support from enrichment programs are critical elements in preparation for success in this highly competitive program," said NC State fellowship advisor Jennie LaMonte. Students agreed, emphasizing the advantage their undergraduate research at NC State gave them in the highly competitive competition, especially NC State's summer research opportunities.

In addition, 15 students and alumni received Honorable Mention recognition from the program, six of which are engineering students or alumni.
