Dr. Richard Keltie has been appointed Associate Dean for Administration and Academic Planning; Dr. Jerome Lavelle has accepted the position of Interim Associate Dean of Undergraduate Academic Affairs; and Dr. David Parish is now serving as Interim Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Academic Affairs.
“These are exciting opportunities for three valued members of the College family,” said Dr. Louis A. Martin-Vega, dean of the College of Engineering. “As the College continues to grow in size, scope and reputation, we are grateful to have such talented administrators handling these important duties. We look forward to seeing all their great work.”
Keltie's position was created to support the Dean of Engineering in all facets of the administrative operation of the College and serve as the College's point of contact for the biennial enrollment planning process, interactions with community colleges and distance education academic programs and summer school administration. Keltie will seek to expand access to the College's academic programs throughout the state and enhance the development of professional degree programs, interdisciplinary programs and related offerings. He served as Associate Dean of Academic Affairs for the previous five years. Keltie is a former recipient of the NC State University Outstanding Teacher Award and was the director of the Center for Sound Vibration in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from 1986-1990. He received his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from NC State in 1978.
Lavelle, who accepted a two-year appointment to his new position, joined the College eight years ago as Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs and remained in that position until this year. He has played a significant role in the development, implementation and growth of various programs in academic affairs including the First-Year Engineering Program, the Engineering Transition Program, the Ben Franklin Scholars Program, the College's ABET accreditation process and many other facets of academic and student service programs. During 2007-08, he received the American Council on Education Fellowship Award that provided him the opportunity to intern in an educational leadership role with the UNC General Administration. Lavelle received his Ph.D. in industrial engineering from NC State in 1992. The College will conduct a national search for a permanent associate dean who will assume the position in Fall 2010.
Parish, who accepted a part-time two-year appointment, has taught classes and served as coordinator of undergraduate advising in the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering for the past six years. He also teaches in the First-Year Engineering Program as an instructor for E101 and has served on the College Courses and Curricula and Coordinators of Advising committees, as well as the University Courses and Curricula Committee. Parish achieved a rank of Captain while in the U.S. Army working as commander of heavy construction and was a personnel officer with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers. He achieved the rank of Major while in the U.S. Army Reserves. Parish received his Ph.D. in civil engineering from NC State in 2001.
